Labour Day celebrations which are
normally held yearly at Uhuru Park in Nairobi, were recently turned into a
battlefield as different politicians took to pulling PR stunts. Nairobi
Governor, Dr. Evans Kidero, and Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko are among leaders who
used the Labour Day celebrations to woo and ask Nairobi residents to vote for
them come August 8, 2017 as they battle each other in the Nairobi gubernatorial
contest.
Being the incumbent Nairobi
governor, Kidero ensured that he had used all the weapons in his arsenal to
trump his competitor Mike Sonko. However, tables turned on Kidero as Sonko took
a more convincing spate to drive his point home. Using every tactic in the
book, Sonko ensured that he had appealed to voter the best way he could.
From his fleet of ‘Sonko Rescue Team’
trucks and members matching alongside other workers from different industries
to his maiden speech, Sonko strongly penetrated into the hearts of many
Kenyans. Through his speech, Sonko also explained to the electorate at Uhuru
Park in Nairobi how he pushed for salaries and allowances of low-income earners
not to be taxed.
The venue was filled with cheers
after Sonko’s speech that is said to have dealt Kidero’s side a big blow.
According to numerous comments on social media, Mike Sonko carried the day in
the just concluded Labour Day celebrations, leaving Kidero in the dark.
