An influential gubernatorial
aspirant in Nyeri county announced his defection from the Jubilee Party a day
to the highly contested nominations. Githinji Kinyanjui alias Cocorico quit the
party, saying being a member is a waste of time, energy and resources.
“I am asking my supporters to not
turn out for the nominations on Wednesday. The party is not ready to offer fair
exercise considering what happened in Kirinyanga when ballot papers were
burned. The promises given are just empty,” said Kinyanjui.
He also took the opportunity to lash
out at Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju for cancelling and postponing
nominations at the last minute. According to the Daily Nation on Monday, April
24, Kinyanjui will now vie as an independent candidate to avoid participating
in an irregular exercise.
He is up against incumbent Governor
Samuel Wamathai and three other candidates. On Friday, April 22, Jubilee
ordered the cancellation of nationwide nominations following problems such as
delayed delivery of ballot papers and boxes, and the destruction of public
property.
Following this, a new Jubilee Party
nomination schedule was released as follows from Monday, April 24- Wednesday,
April 26. Monday- Nairobi, Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kirinyaga and Nandi.
Tuesday- Lamu, Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Kilifi, Tana River,
