Jubilee’s gubernatorial aspirants
made a memorandum of understanding as they all campaigned to clinch the ticket
to vie for Nairobi governor. The agreement was that all aspirants; Nairobi
Senator Mike Sonko and former Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, would work together
against their party opponent, Peter Kenneth, and to take down Nairobi Governor
Evans Kidero. Sonko and Wanjiru agreed that whoever gets to face off with
Kidero on August 8, they will pick the other as his running mate.
Sonko won the gubernatorial
nomination as Peter Kenneth opposed the results and Margaret Wanjiru arrested
for sparking off polling station chaos. However, the pact failed to hold water
when Sonko took to social media to hold a poll on whom between billionaire
businessmen Chris Kirubi and Jimnah Mbaru he should pick as his deputy
governor. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, April 30, Wanjiru demanded Sonko
uphold their pact and pick her as his running mate.
Later, Kirubi issued a stunning
statement in response to Sonko’s job offer. “We had an MoU with Mike Sonko that
whoever won the nomination would pick the other as running mate. This is the
deal he has no otherwise but to honour,” said Wanjiru. She also threatened to
vie as an independent candidate if he failed to uphold the agreement.
