Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has
finally unveiled his running mate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat. The move
comes after days of seeking and haggling for his number two amidst accusations
that he was not qualified to run the city affairs. And to redeem himself, Sonko
has been shopping around for a 'technocrat' as his running mate arguing the
person will help him in managing the county affairs. Sonko names his running
mate and it is a suprise Sonko.
In his first attempt, the Senator
has approached two billionaires, Chris Kirubi and Jimna Mbaru but they both
turned down the offer.. He then listed another six people and asked his
followers on Facebook to help him pick the person best placed to deputise him.
"Great people of Nairobi, some say politics is about numbers. This FB page
of mine has over 1,123,000 fans out of which 825,892 are Nairobians. Hebu
munisaidie hapa(help me her) whom do you think deserves to be my Deputy
Governor?" he said.
Sonko names his running mate and it
is a suprise Igathe during a confrontation with nominated Senator Paul Njoroge.
Among those in the list were Bishop Margeret Wanjiru who is a former MP for
Starehe, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru, Milicent Omanga who was among those
defeated in the Jubilee party primaries and former Nairobi city John Gakuo.
Others were educationist Janet Ouko,
Jimna Mbaru, Raymond Matiba who is son to liberation hero Kenneth Matiba,
former presidential candidate James Ole Kiyiapi and Vivo energy CEO Polycarp
Igathe. Now, Sonko has opted for Igathe in a move likely to attract and appease
the Nairobi middle class and business owners who were uncomfortable with his
style of leadership.
