Just days after he was named as
Raila Odinga's running mate, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has resigned, at
least according to a fake letter making rounds online. Kalonzo was unveiled
together with Raila to fly the NASA flag and go head to head with President
Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto in the August 8 polls. Whilst
Kalonzo has admitted it took him pain to take the second position, he has
however maintained he is in the coalition for good.
Fellow Kenyans, I hereby wish to
withdraw from NASA(a process which my legal team has began) and offer my
candidacy for the office of the president of the Republic of Kenya, under the
Wiper Democratic Movement ticket. I shall soon be naming my running mate. With
this move, I aspire to claim our lost glory, our lost ideals, our lost greatness
and once again become a beacon of peace, love and unity," says the letter
purported to be signed by Kalonzo and dated Saturday May 5. Whereas it is
allowable for NASA members to withdraw from the coalition voluntarily if they
want to, the document was most likely crafted by the Opposition competitors in
a move designed to create a wedge between the principals and confusion among
supporters.
But because this is politics, the
letter could also have come from Wiper itself as a way to blackmail other NASA
partners into holding its leader in high regard or to satiate members of Wiper
who felt shortchanged.
